Dormy House Hotel
Dormy House: the transformation
£10m investment creates finest luxury hotel in the Cotswolds
Dormy House is one of the best-loved Cotswold hotels. It is a converted 17th century farmhouse steeped in tradition, with oak-panelled bars, roaring log fires and a two-rosette restaurant. Visitors are perfectly placed for the Regency terraces of Cheltenham and the theatre at Stratford-upon-Avon.
The original house was originally called Willersey Hill Farm and its owners farmed the surrounding land. In mediaeval times, the area was renowned for its wealth. The wool barons made great fortunes from the famous Cotswold Lion sheep.
In the mid 1940s, the farmhouse was bought by Broadway Golf Club next door and given its new name: Dormy House. Not many people realize that Dormy is a golfing term for “unbeatable”!
By 1977 – a few changes of ownership later – entrepreneur Jørgen Philip-Sørensen had bought the hotel and embarked on an enormous and adventurous building project. During the excavation it was necessary for an archaeologist to oversee the work, as there is a long barrow (Iron Age burial site) nearby. Great effort and consideration was given to the design of the new building to ensure the natural beauty of the surrounding area was preserved.
After 35 years, Dormy House is currently undergoing a major programme of works to prepare it for a new generation of customers. An investment of £10m by the family will transform this lovely old building into the finest small luxury hotel in the Cotswolds. There will be two distinct dining areas, lovely lounges and new bedrooms all styled by the interior design company Todhunter Earle. Gardens are being reshaped by the landscape designer and TV presenter Chris Beardshaw. There is also a great deal of excitement about the creation of House Spa, a stunning modern spa with large pool, thermal suites, gym and every amenity.
Dormy guests love the feel of the old building and the personal attention to detail and none of this will be lost in the redevelopment. The hotel re-opens in August 2013 and will be followed by House Spa in 2014.
