Christmas brings to mind the famous King’s College Choir in Cambridge, and most of us know the Chapel as an image of soaring grandeur. But why was this extraordinary structure nearly a century in the building, and what is the story behind its choir? Using beautiful slides and superb recordings, this talk describes how five successive monarchs used the chapel as a showcase to advertise their power and taste. While the choir commissions fine music from our leading composers, the Chapel itself is the ultimate Gothic illusion, with thousands of tons of vaulting that “float” in mid-air. Today the architecture alone makes the Chapel unique; the music makes it heavenly.
