This is the story of the women who colonised the world and made an Empire possible. While Britain in the 19th century was all too often a place of repression for women, the Empire and its colonies could offer women opportunities. We will explore the lives of some of the women: redoubtable ladies of British India; hardworking settlers in the Americas; ex-officer’s wives and criminals who founded Australia and the largely forgotten Native Canadian women who made the fur trade possible. This course will look at some of the unsung heroines from the British age of colonisation.
