Portugal is our oldest ally, or so it is claimed. For most of us, the country is a pleasant holiday destination and the source of the drink Port. Yet Portugal has a long and fascinating history, emerging from The Roman Empire and being conquered by Islam before carving out a separate identity to that of its big neighbour, Spain. Portugal also created an overseas empire in South America, Africa and The Far East. We shall tell all of this story, and in so doing, will gain further insights into the history of Europe in general.
