Portugal is our oldest ally, or so it is claimed. For most of us, the country is a pleasant holiday destination and the source of the drink Port. Yet Portugal has a long and fascinating history, emerging from The Roman Empire and being conquered by Islam before carving out a separate identity to that of its big neighbour, Spain. Portugal also created an overseas empire in South America, Africa and The Far East.
