Explore the cultural & religious significance of the Green Man carvings in ecclesiastical buildings in the Middle Ages and possible connections with the fourteenth century poem Sir Gawain & the Green Knight, legendary figures such as Robin Hood and folk customs such as the Jack in the Green. And what is his significance today? The tutors are authors of the best-selling ‘The Green Man in Britain’ (The History Press). The course will be copiously illustrated by slides and videos and there will be a visit to see the Green Men carvings in Tewkesbury Abbey, transport provided.
